Sandhill Cranes, Grus canadensis are impressive birds with a wingspan of about 6 feet and standing about 4.5-5 feet tall. Bosque del Apache generally hosts over 10,000 individuals during the period of Nov.-Feb. and the birds are easy to observe and photograph on the refuge.
The snow goose, Chen caerulescens, is found in high numbers at Bosque del Apache in the winter. The large flocks of the white and blue morph arean impressive sight on the ponds and in the fields. Most impressive are the "puffs" or "blastoffs" when thousands of geese take off, the sight and sound is something you will never forget.
With the large numbers of birds at the Bosque there are a number of opportunities to experiment creating images that go beyond the typical. These images are my attempt to create different and unique images.
During fall and winter there are some spectacular sunsets and sunrises.
In addition to the Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes there are a large number of ducks and other water birds in the ponds of Bosque del Apache.
