The common loon is a symbol of the north, with a distinctive vocalization they are actually not very common but appreciated wherever they are found.
My first photo trip of 2015 was to Winnipeg, Canada with friends to search for and photograph owls. With Winnipeg resident, photographer and friend, Anne Klassen we were able to photograph Northern Hawk Owls (Surnia ulula) and Snowy Owls ( Nyctea scandiaca).
After a successful trip to Bosque del Apache we headed to Arizona to photograph returning to this area for the winter.
All photos were taken on Lac Lejeune.
Some shots from a recent trip to South Texas. The first trip of the new year.
For a number of years I have been trying to make the area around my home, bluebird friendly. I provide nest boxes, food, and never apply chemicals to my lawn. I was very happy this year to have a number of birds and 3 successful nesting pairs.
It was a little early in the season for peak activity, but we still had a great time. I don't think I captured the perfect shot I was looking for but it was a tremendous experience watching and photographing and I will return in my quest for the perfect shot. These photos demonstrate the changing quality of light with some photos taken before sunrise, at sunrise, and for a couple of hours after sunrise.
Bonaventure Island is known for its population of Northern Gannets. We stayed at a wonderful B&B, La Maison Rehel in Perce, Quebec and it was an easy walk to the wharf to catch the daily ferry to the island. After a walk across the island you experience an amazing gannet colony. Boardwalks and a tower enable you to get some very unique views of these magnificent birds.
Ile aux Perroquets is an amazing place to visit. Although day trips are available, the best experience is if you can stay on this tiny island. We were able to stay on the island and enjoy the quiet beauty and amazing bird life on this island. This island uses solar power, composting toilets, and a desalinization plant to be completely self sufficient. The shores abound with Altantic Puffins, Common Razorbills, Black Guillemots, Common Eiders, and other birds. On the island Savanah Sparrows are common with some other species as well. To experience this island by staying on the island is a truly memorable experience.
